Only 10 years ago, India's Tata Motors Ltd unveiled its first car, a hatchback, that established the truck maker's credentials as a car maker. Tomorrow, the $7.8 billion company unveils its boldest initiative yet, a car that will sell for just $2,500, less than half the cheapest car on the market. Dubbed the 'People's Car', it will determine Tata's place in the global automotive area. They might also export the car as it would sell well in Africa and South and Central America.
There are worries about whether at such low costs it can meet safety standards, whether its a ticking time bomb, whether it will add to the growing pollution rate in India and so on.. Well everything will have to be seen after the car's performance on the road.
In a way i do feel that's its good because now low income, middle income families can also strive to get a car for a family instead of being crammed onto a scooter with luggage and kids and all.(Ya sure the oil, gas, fuel prices are going rocket high, but that is not slowing down or stopping the Indians in buying cars and all that.)

yeah, i am proid to see that the move by Tata is making a global impact, and i am sure this move will have far reaching consequnses... but, from the technical point fo view, i am a bit skeptical. the car is made of palstic - plastic cannot berepierd as steel - if any part gets crack or it gets involved in an accident, the part have to be replaced. second, the saftey norms - thay r not really great. the wheel bearing, whcih will deteriorate fast fo used above 70kmph and lot otehr small knick knacs... i think other than being potentially unsafe in case of a head on colltion, the car mey prove expensive to maintain over aperiod of time. but honestly, i wish i could prove wrong, and teh car turn out to be a gem...
any way, one this is sure - as many people name - teh gandhi engineering - will make its mark in world map..
@xh
hehe...well the first thoughyt that crossed my mind wen i read its made of plastic is "good lord wat will happen wen there is an accident'? will we get any survivours? humm
Even the world and myself are skeptical about a lot of it...but me being the proud India, just hope that it will work out...
